On this latest installment of Unidentified History, we take a look at one of the more tragic cases in the history of Ufology, the Thomas Mantel incident, one of the few documented fatalities involving UFOs. As usual, we also take a look at some recent news stories including Matthew Brown and Jesse Michels discussing potential agreements with non-human intelligence, updates from Congress regarding disclosure and preparedness plans for the confirmation of non-human intelligence. We also discuss the Pentagon’s interest in accessing private UFO records, raising concerns about potential classification and the implications for transparency in UFO research. The back half of the episode then transitions to the tragic case of Thomas Mantell, a military pilot who died while pursuing a UFO. We dive deeply into exploring the circumstances surrounding his pursuit and the various explanations for what he may have seen, including the possibility of a Skyhook balloon. The conversation highlights the complexities and mysteries surrounding UFO encounters and the ongoing quest for understanding in the field of Ufology. But, in true Unidentified History fashion, we found something new! Evidence from recently released Air Force documents, through the DOW’s official UFO file drops, adds complexity to the narrative, suggesting that the military took the sightings seriously and that the most famous statement attributed to Mantell may have been corroborated by contemporaneous documentation.
